(WBAP/KLIF) – According to Customs and Border Protection the total number of migrant encounters exceeded 260,000 in September, which breaks the previous record of 252,320 set back in December of 2022. This figure includes both encounters with the Border Patrol between ports of entry and encounters with the Office of Field Operations at the ports.
Each day agents have been encountering between 10,000 and 11,000 migrants at the southern border. The problem at the southern border comes at a critical time when a government shutdown is possible. Since Border Patrol agents are considered employees that are essential to national security, during a shutdown agents would still have to work without pay.
On Saturday afternoon, the House of Representatives passed a 45-day short-term spending bill aimed at avoiding a government shutdown. The bill now goes to the senate. If the bill passes the Senate, government agencies would be funded through mid-November.
