North Texas Woman Charged with Murder in Former Tarrant County Judge’s Fentanyl Overdose Death

GRAPEVINE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Another North Texan has been charged with murder and possession of a controlled substance in connection to a fentanyl overdose, this one tied to a former Tarrant County official.

Grapevine Police said 35-year-old Kami Ludwig was arrested and charged this week after her boyfriend’s overdose in their home last year.

Authorities responded to a house in the 4100 block of Mapleridge Drive for a death investigation on November 20, 2023.

First responders found North Texas attorney and former Tarrant County Judge William Shane Nolen dead in a bedroom from of a fentanyl overdose.

Investigators said Ludwig purchased fentanyl-laced pills, Xanax, cocaine and other drugs from dealers in Fort Worth and Louisiana.

During a search of Ludwig’s phone, police found that she called an alleged dealer of the “M-30” pills several times and visited the person in Fort Worth the day before Nolen died.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for murder on February 9 and Ludwig turned herself into Tarrant County officials three days later.

Ludwig is the latest person charged under a new state law went into effect in September of 2023, creating a criminal offense of murder for manufacturing or supplying fentanyl that results in death.

The law has historically been used to target dealers. According to arrest documents, Ludwing and Nolen appeared to have habitually used drugs.
