Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley Suspends Presidential Campaign

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley suspended her 2024 presidential campaign on Wednesday, leaving former President Donald Trump as the lone candidate in the quest for the GOP nomination.

The move comes after Haley lost a majority of the primary races, including in her home state. The only state she won on Super Tuesday was Vermont.

She also won the primary race in Washington D.C. last week, becoming the first woman to win any GOP presidential primary race.

Speaking in Charleston, South Carolina, Haley said she wasn’t ready to give up on her vision for reshaping the Republican Party.

“Our national debt will eventually crush our economy. A smaller federal government is not only necessary for our freedom, it is necessary for our survival. Our Congress is dysfunctional and only getting worse. It its filled with followers not leaders. Term limits for Washington politicians are needed more than now than ever,” she said.

Haley also talked about her world view.

“Our world is on fire because of America’s retreat. Standing by our allies in Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan is a moral imperative but it’s also more than that. If we retreat further, there will be more war not less. As important while we stand strong for the cause of freedom. We must bind together as Americans. We must turn away from the darkness of hate and division,” she said.

The former UN Ambassador also sent a message to Trump but stopped short of endorsing him.

“In all likelihood Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee when our party convention meets in July. I congratulate him and wish him well. I wish anyone well who would be America’s president. Our country is too precious to let our differences divide us,” she said.

Trump responded to Haley’s message on Wendesday.

“Nikki Haley got TROUNCED last night, in record setting fashion, despite the fact that Democrats, for reasons unknown, are allowed to vote in Vermont, and various other Republican Primaries,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Much of her money came from Radical Left Democrats, as did many of her voters, almost 50%, according to the polls.”

Biden also responded to Haley’s move to suspend her campaign.

“Donald Trump made it clear he doesn’t want Nikki Haley’s supporters. I want to be clear: There is a place for them in my campaign. I know there is a lot we don’t agree on . But on the fundamental issues of preserving American democracy, on standing up for the rule of law, on treating each other with decency and dignity and respect, on preserving NATO and standing up to America’s adversaries, I hope and believe we can find common ground,” reported CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on X.

President Biden and Trump won their respective parties’ presidential primaries in Texas and beyond.

The two are now officially barreling towards a rematch in the November 5th election.
