Testimony Continues at Capital Murder Trial of Man Accused of Shooting Burleson Police Officer, Killing Carjacking Victim in 2021

JOHNSON COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The capital murder trial of the North Texas man accused of fatally shooting a Burleson police officer during a killing spree in 2021 continues.

Prosecutors said Jerry Elders shot Officer Joshua Lot three times during a traffic stop before carjacking and murdering 60-year-old Robin Waddell and leaving her body outside the Joshua Police Department.

Earlier this week, jurors were shown surveillance video that showed his allegedly firing the fatal shots at Lot.

Jurors also heard testimony from Officer Lot and two passengers who were in Elders’ SUV when the shooting occurred.

Prosecutors said after the shooting, Elder carjacked Wadell outside her Johnson County home and kidnapped her. They told jurors surveillance video shows the truck crashing into the gate of the Joshua Police Department after Wadell reportedly grabbed the steering wheel.

It’s believed Elders then shot Wadell twice and pushed her out of the truck before taking off. After a major manhunt, Elders was captured in Gainesville.

On Thursday, jurors heard testimony about the way evidence in the case was handled and whether it was legally obtained.

If found guilty, Elders faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
