GRAPEVINE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Grapevine Colleyville ISD is taking an extra step to limit the use of cell phones in the classroom.
The school board voted this week to ban them and impose a fine for repeat offenders.
During Monday’s meeting, one board member stressed support between officials, educators and parents will be key to enforcing the changes.
“Because this will be a difficult thing to enforce and I think them understanding that they have our full support to do that in order to improve the learning outcomes is going to be critical,” she said.
Middle and high school students will only be allowed to use their phones before and after school or during lunch.
High school students also be allowed usage during passing periods. Elementary students can not have cell phone during the school day.
Students caught breaking the rules for or more times will be hit with a $15 fine and their phones will be taken to the office.
Cell phone usage in the classroom has been an issue for other school districts as well. Keller ISD proposed a ban on all cell phone use during school hours last week.
Mansfield ISD passed its own cell phone policy last year.
