City of Princeton Implements Temporary Moratorium on New Home Construction Amid Growing Pains

PRINCETON (WBAP/KLIF News ) – One of the fastest growing North Texas cities is experiencing expansion pains and its leaders issued a temporary moratorium on new home construction to help out.

During a meeting Tuesday night, Princeton Mayor Brianna Chacon said she noticed issues with the large number development agreements being made when she first took office in 2020.

She referenced an email she sent suggesting a temporary moratorium in 2021.

“That would allow us to stop growth so that we can focus on infrastructure, we can focus on better growth…and to just be able to alleviate some of the problems we were having then. Unfortunately, as you can see that didn’t happen,” she said.

Chacon said the current growth rate is not sustainable right now. She asked the council if development could done better if its paused for a short amount of time.

“So that we’re not just building for the sake of building but we’re building with purpose. That we’re not putting houses in that have 40 lot lines on them. We want something better as a city,” she said.

The moratorium is a 120 day pause as allowed by state law. However, the city can request an extension after that period.

“Are we going to fix every single problem within that first time frame? Absolutely not but it does allow us to sit back and actually look at the problem and say ‘How do we do this better? How does infrastructure get caught up? How do roads get build better?'” said Chacon.

Princeton is about 10 miles east of McKinney.
