NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The American Red Cross of Greater North Texas is in dire need of volunteers and donations as the organization provides relief to hurricane-ravaged areas in the southeast.
The region is still in the throws of recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene which devastated the region as a Category 4 storm late last month, killing more than 230 people and devastating parts of Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia and Tennessee.
Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm bringing severe rain, winds, and flooding to the Sunshine State. It’s left almost three million people without power.
The situation has forced nonprofits like the American Red Cross to work in overdrive to help the millions of people who need aid.
The American Red Cross GNT said it’s looking for people to serve as shelter associates. The nonprofit’s DFW Metro West Chapter Executive Director Adolph Aguirre details what volunteers can expect.
“They will help us with setting up the cots and all the essentials needed by those who are seeking refuge. Expect to have mass people coming in seeking a warm place to just get some rest and figure out their next steps and figuring out what they’re going to do,” he said.
Aguirre said the impact volunteers have on storm victims is two-fold, stressing that those who’ve lost everything in a natural disaster are deeply touched by the act of kindness.
“You get to make and difference and it just really helps them see that there are people who care and are willing to sacrifice their time and their resources to help them in their time of need. You can actually see the face of gratitude,” said Aguirre.
