Death and destruction overtake Texas Hill Country in the wake of severe flash flooding

UPDATE; 07/04 5:30 PM – The Texas National Guard is activated to help with search and rescue efforts. Six people are now confirmed dead, but 20 young girls at a summer camp on the banks of the flooded Guadelupe River remain missing – as do people in their mobile homes in a park in Ingram, Texas, all washed away as occupants slept. The death toll is expected to go much higher. Officials estimate the Guadelupe River rose as much as 29 feet within a matter of minutes before daybreak, as campers lined the banks of the river. Severe flooding is reported from Hunt, Texas, through Kerrville and Center Point, with additional flooding reported in Kendall County, just north of Boerne. Searches are expected to continue for some time, with an unknown number of families apparently washed away in their riverside tents, sometime near 4AM on July the 4rh.

Associated Press: Months’ worth of heavy rain fell over just a few hours overnight in central Kerr County, Texas, causing flash flooding of the Guadalupe River. The Kerr County sheriff’s office confirmed fatalities but did not provide additional details. A flood watch issued Thursday afternoon estimated isolated amounts up to seven inches of rain, but as much as 10 inches poured down. The watch shifted to a flood warning for at least 30,000 people overnight. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, strong thunderstorms are being blamed for at least three deaths.
