AUSTIN – (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law a Republican leaning redistricting bill approved by state lawmakers, and finalizing a new congressional district map requested by President Trump ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Republicans hope the change could garner them five additional seats in the U.S. House.

Texas Democrats left the state’s special legislative session to deny the House a quorum and vote on the measure. They returned after appearing with leaders of Democratic run states pushing for redistricting efforts to counterbalance the Texas district changes. Democratic political leaders in the states of California, Illinois and New York held news conferences with the Texan Democrats, decrying the changes as silencing the voices of minority voters in the Lone Star State.

The battle has moved into the courts; several lawsuits are now filed, and a three-judge panel in an El Paso based U S District court has set a preliminary injunction hearing for October first through the tenth.
