TEA To Take Over Fort Worth Independent School District

FORT WORTH – (WBAP/KLIF) -Commissioner of the Texas Education Agency Mike Morath says he’s ordered the appointment of a board of managers, and a district-managing conservator, in a letter sent to those impacted by the changes.

The action was taken after one of the campuses in the ISD received it’s fifth consercutive unacceptable academic accountability rating after the 2022-2023 school year. FWISD closed the failing school.

In a statement, Fort Worth ISD’s Board of Trustees said the board is “disappointed by the decision and hopes the matter will be reconsidered”, saying, the board is now reviewing the decision and will “explore all possible options”.

Over the next several months, Morath said the agency will hold community meetings and evaluate applicants to serve on the state-appointed board.

Next week, Morath will meet with the school board to hear more about the changes the district has made and its plans for the future, he said. What the district leaders say could, or could not, affect Morath’s course of action, he said.

The state will keep control over the district until there are no more campuses that consistently receive unacceptable academic accountability ratings, Morath said. Currently, the district has 20 campuses that have received an unacceptable rating for two or more years.

This is not the first time the state has taken over a school district. TEA took control of Houston ISD in 2023.
