LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivia’s largest cities La Paz and Santa Cruz have been brought to a standstill as public transportation workers strike against a 100% fuel price increase ordered by the new government. Food and transportation prices have soared. Protesters blocked streets on Friday and transportation was shut down. Union leader Edson Valdez warned that protests could spread if subsidies aren’t restored. Presidency Minister José Luis Lupo insists that the decree is nonnegotiable though public service rates may be discussed. President Rodrigo Paz has been in office for more than a month and he aims to stabilize the economy. The government plans to save $3 billion by cutting fuel subsidies despite public unrest.
