Dallas officer shoots suspect overnight during violent traffic stop near Highland Park Village
DALLAS — A Dallas police officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital overnight after the officer shot the suspect during a traffic stop that quickly turned violent.
Around 2:16 a.m., on Sunday, April 19, a Dallas police officer pulled over a vehicle in the 4100 block of Mockingbird Lane near Highland Park Village for driving without its headlights on, Terrence Rhodes, executive assistant chief with the Dallas Police Department, said in a press release.
Shortly after the vehicle pulled over, its passenger approached the police vehicle and hit the officer at least once in the face, Rhodes said. The officer then drew his weapon and fired at the suspect twice, hitting him once, officials said.
Both the suspect and the officer were taken to the hospital, Rhodes said. Police did not immediately release the condition of the suspect or the officer.
The driver of the vehicle left the scene and is still at large, officials said. The incident remains under investigation.
