WASHINGTON (AP) — Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche says the accused gunman who tried to storm the ballroom at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is believed to have been targeting President Donald Trump and top members of his administration. Blanche says officials believe the suspect traveled by train from California to Chicago and then on to Washington, where he checked in as a guest to the hotel where one of Washington’s glitziest events was being held Saturday night. President Donald Trump was rushed off the stage at the sound of gunshots. The 31-year-old suspect is in custody and facing charges. Blanche appeared on the Sunday news shows.
Trump calls for unity and bipartisan healing after another violent incident. But will it last?
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is calling for unity after what he says he feels was a third assassination attempt. He spoke on Saturday night about the experience shortly after a man armed with guns and knives tried to rush past the security perimeter inside a Washington hotel where the president was about to speak to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Trump suggested his politics made him a target. The Republican president is emphasizing the need for bipartisan healing. And he’s comparing himself to Abraham Lincoln, saying that significant political figures are often targeted.
