The Department of War is funding domestic production of a satellite component essential to orbital power systems.
On July 7, the agency directed $7.1 million in Defense Production Act (DPA) Title III funds to Martin Materials Solutions LLC to establish and expand space solar cell coverglass manufacturing in Twinsburg, Ohio, the department reported.
The coverglass shields solar cells from radiation, filters wavelengths, guards against micrometeorites, and maintains structural integrity on every satellite. The spending advances goals set in Executive Order 14369, issued on December 18, 2025, to strengthen U.S. space industrial capabilities.
“Space-qualified coverglass is a critical component for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of a satellite’s power system,” said Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy, the Honorable Michael Cadenazzi. “A robust domestic manufacturing capability secures our national space assets and ensures the continuity of our orbital missions.”
The funds will allow Martin Materials Solutions to acquire modern equipment, hire specialized staff, secure raw materials, and expand facilities for design, development, and production of the coverglass.
This project is one of six DPA Title III awards totaling $109.7 million made by the WIRE directorate since the start of fiscal 2026; recipient cost shares reached $1.1 million in the same period.
