
A 2026 state-by-state ranking identifies snakes more often than any other animal as the nation’s “most dangerous” animal, while naming the alligator as Texas’ top danger.
World Population Review assigns one animal or animal group to each state. Snakes lead in 14 states, followed by bears in eight. But the page does not publish injury or fatality totals or explain how it selected the animals.
The ranking cites one A-Z Animals article. That link now redirects to the outlet’s homepage, leaving the underlying analysis unavailable. Readers should therefore treat the list as World Population Review’s assessment, not proof of which animals cause the most deaths in each state.
Snakes lead the rankings
Ten of the 14 snake picks are rattlesnake species. The website identifies the western diamondback in Arizona, Southern Pacific rattlesnake in California, timber rattlesnake in Connecticut and Kansas, prairie rattlesnake in North Dakota and Mojave rattlesnake in Nevada.
It also lists the eastern massasauga in Michigan, pygmy rattlesnake in Georgia, western pygmy rattlesnake in Oklahoma and eastern diamondback in Louisiana. Other snake picks include copperheads, a cottonmouth and Hawaii’s yellow-bellied sea snake.
Bears and other threats
Black bears or regional variants top the list in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Oregon, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Grizzly bears lead in Idaho, Montana and Washington.
Whitetail deer, moose and coyotes each rank first in four states. Sharks lead in three. Bison, Portuguese man o’ war, black widow spiders and alligators each top two states. Dogs, mountain lions, mosquitoes, ticks and wasps appear once apiece.
Alligator tops Texas
World Population Review lists the American alligator for Florida and an alligator for Texas. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says most Texans in alligator country live near the reptiles without confrontations. The agency advises people never to feed alligators, to keep their distance and to keep pets leashed near alligator habitat.
