The Pulitzer Prizes and the American Library Association announced Thursday the launch of a new traveling exhibition, Pulitzer on the Road: Prize-Winning Works That Inform, Empower & Inspire.
The 1,400-square-foot display will visit 20 public libraries across the United States over the next two years, with its debut scheduled for mid-October at the Dallas Public Library’s J. Erik Jonsson Central Library and the Chicago Public Library’s Harold Washington Library Center.
The exhibition, produced and fully funded by The Pulitzer Prizes in partnership with the American Library Association, features panels, interactive stations, and storytelling focused on more than a century of prize-winning journalism, books, drama, and music. It remains free and open to the public at every stop.
Exhibition Details and Launch Events
According to the joint announcement, the national tour begins in October at the two central libraries in Dallas and Chicago, where the exhibition will remain on display through December 2026.
Public launch events are set for October 14 in Chicago and October 24 in Dallas. The Dallas event will feature author Barbara Kingsolver, the 2023 Fiction winner, and composer Gabriela Frank, the 2026 Music winner.
Marjorie Miller, administrator of The Pulitzer Prizes, stated the following:
“Pulitzer on the Road was created to bring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism and storytelling to communities across the country, showcasing the exceptional work that has been honored since the prizes were first awarded in 1917. This exhibition and associated events will be free to attend and open to the public, so as many people as possible can experience firsthand the impact these stories have had. ALA is a terrific partner for this endeavor.”
Maria McCauley, president of the American Library Association, added that “Public libraries are the perfect venue for this exhibition because they are places where people congregate to learn, discover new perspectives and engage with ideas that shape our communities. By partnering with The Pulitzer Prizes to bring Pulitzer on the Road to libraries nationwide, we’re creating opportunities for visitors to connect with the excellent prize-winning works that drive curiosity, conversation and civic engagement.”
Host Libraries and Scope
The 20 selected libraries, chosen from a competitive applicant pool, span communities from California to Puerto Rico.
Each will host the exhibition for approximately six weeks and receive cash grants to support related public programming. Additional participating libraries and their approximate periods include Sevier County Public Library System in Sevierville, Tennessee (January 2027); Warren Public Library in Warren, Michigan (January 2027); San Jose Public Library in San Jose, California (March 2027); and others continuing through May 2028 at Biblioteca Municipal e Infantil Mariana Suárez de Longo in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Full details of the tour and host sites are available on the American Library Association website and the Pulitzer Prizes news page.
Exhibition Content
The display is organized into six sections covering the history of the prizes since 1917, key moments in American history through photography and reporting, international coverage, storytelling across categories, the impact of prize-winning work (with emphasis on local journalism), and a closing invitation for visitors to consider their own roles as storytellers.
Highlights include iconic photographs from World War II and more recent conflicts, reporting such as the Pentagon Papers and Watergate coverage, literature by Toni Morrison, John Steinbeck, Sylvia Plath, and Robert Frost, drama by Arthur Miller and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and music by Wynton Marsalis, Aretha Franklin, and Bob Dylan.
An interactive station allows visitors to view examples of Pulitzer-winning journalism from their home states.
The exhibition was designed by Quatrefoil Associates. Additional information appears in the full announcement released Thursday.
The Dallas Public Library’s downtown location will serve as one of the two inaugural sites, providing North Texas residents early access to the materials and associated events beginning in October.
