The War Department launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil Monday, adding a secure version of ChatGPT designed to support more than 3 million military and civilian personnel.
The department said the system has accreditation for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5 and supports document-heavy unclassified work involving planning, policy, logistics and administration.
The launch advances an enterprise partnership between the War Department and OpenAI that began in 2025. The Dallas Express previously reported in February that the department planned to bring ChatGPT to GenAI.mil after the platform reached one million users.
ChatGPT Mil goes live
ChatGPT Mil centers on chat, files, projects and custom GPTs, with additional features planned over time, according to the department.
OpenAI said in its February announcement that the customized system runs in authorized government cloud infrastructure. OpenAI keeps data processed through GenAI.mil isolated from its public and commercial models and does not use the data to train or improve those models, according to the company.
The company said the system can help personnel summarize policy and guidance documents, draft and review procurement materials, generate internal reports and compliance checklists, and support research, planning and administrative workflows.
Military expands AI options
The ChatGPT Mil rollout is part of a broader push to give personnel access to multiple frontier AI systems. The War Department also launched Starshield AI’s Grok for Government on GenAI.mil Monday.
The department said GenAI.mil has onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users since its launch nine months ago. Officials said using multiple models reduces dependence on a single vendor while expanding AI tools across the Joint Force.
The Chief Digital and AI Office and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering will continue expanding the department’s frontier AI capabilities. Officials said the ChatGPT Mil launch also supports the White House AI Action Plan and the department’s effort to use AI for military missions and decision-making.
