U.S. Border Patrol agents rescued eight illegal aliens, including a child, after finding them locked inside an autorack freight car during a train inspection near Knippa, Texas.
The rescue happened on August 30 when agents assigned to the Uvalde Border Patrol Station were inspecting trains on a rail siding near Knippa.
A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to a stationary freight car carrying automobiles. When agents inspected the rail car, they discovered eight people locked inside with no apparent way to escape.
The group included seven adults and one child. Border Patrol said the individuals were medically assessed before being taken to the Uvalde Station for processing.
Authorities said the group included three illegal aliens from Mexico, three illegal aliens from El Salvador, one illegal alien from Guatemala, and one illegal alien of Chinese nationality.
The discovery came as temperatures in the area approached 100 degrees. Border Patrol officials warned that the combination of extreme heat, limited water, and confinement inside a freight car can quickly become life-threatening.
“Alien smugglers have no regard for those they prey upon,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony “Scott” Good.
“Temperatures in this area exceed 100 degrees daily,” Good said. “Were it not for the actions of our highly trained agents, this situation could have had a tragic outcome.”
The agency urged anyone experiencing distress while being transported in dangerous conditions to call 911 immediately.
Border Patrol said confined spaces and extreme temperatures can create serious risks, particularly when people have limited access to water or no means of escape.
The rescued individuals remain subject to immigration processing following the incident.
