The surveillance powers Washington expanded after the September 11 terrorist attacks did not disappear when the immediate emergency passed. A new episode of Forgotten History traces how those authorities evolved alongside technology into systems capable of tracking far more than suspected terrorists.
Written and hosted by Mike Droberg, the episode moves from the Patriot Act and NSA programs exposed by Edward Snowden to cell-site simulators, data brokers, Ring cameras, facial recognition, Flock license plate readers and artificial intelligence. The 2015 law ended the NSA’s bulk collection of domestic telephone metadata under Section 215, but other surveillance authorities remained in place.
The Flock segment carries particular relevance in North Texas. As recently reported by The Dallas Express, Dallas police plan to cancel 321 state-supported Flock cameras on September 15 after Gov. Greg Abbott froze state funding, while more than 300 other cameras are expected to remain in service.
The episode also acknowledges that modern surveillance tools can help police find missing children and violent offenders. Its central question is where Americans should draw the line as technologies built for security become part of everyday life.
