Wills Point police and other law enforcement agencies are searching for a handcuffed man who escaped early Tuesday during a transfer to federal immigration authorities, according to a department release.
The man fled at about 4 a.m. Police identified Van Zandt County Road 3901, known as Deen Road, as the area where authorities last reported him. He remained at large when the department issued its Tuesday morning release.
Police describe suspect
Police described the man as Hispanic and approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall. He wore a navy blue shirt or hoodie and blue jeans when he escaped.
The man wore handcuffs in front when he escaped, and police believe he is unarmed. Officers urged residents to use caution and remain aware of their surroundings.
Wills Point officers and personnel from other law enforcement agencies are searching areas where investigators believe the man may have traveled. They are also conducting follow-up work aimed at locating and apprehending him.
Police coordinate with schools
Wills Point police are coordinating with Wills Point Independent School District and other local law enforcement agencies as the search continues.
Investigators had found no information indicating a specific threat to area schools when the department issued its release.
Police warned residents not to approach or attempt to detain the man. Anyone who sees someone matching the description or knows his whereabouts should contact the Wills Point Police Department immediately.
