What Officials Have Confirmed
In a September 16 statement, South Africa’s presidency said Ramaphosa had withdrawn from public engagements because of ill health. He returned from the BRICS summit on Monday, September 14, and his medical team advised him to rest and recover.
The statement did not disclose symptoms, a diagnosis, hospitalization or a connection to food served at the summit.

India’s denial and South Africa’s confirmation concern different claims: an alleged pattern involving multiple leaders and one president’s illness.
Why The Leaders Gathered
BRICS brings together major emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, alongside newer members, for cooperation on economic and international affairs.
South Africa’s published summit remarks document sessions in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 addressing global governance, multilateral cooperation and inclusive economic growth.
Health was also on the agenda. In September 13 remarks, the World Health Organization’s director-general discussed disease surveillance, early warning systems, vaccine production and pandemic preparedness under India’s themes of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.

Illness Has Interrupted Diplomacy Before
A prominent historical example occurred in Japan on January 8, 1992, when President George H.W. Bush became ill during a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa.
The official presidential record says Bush left before his scheduled remarks. Barbara Bush spoke, and national security adviser Brent Scowcroft delivered the President’s address.
At a news conference the following day, Bush said he was recovering and described the illness as a brief bout of flu. He also said a businessman and some journalists on the trip had been ill.
Is This Common In India?
Travel-related gastrointestinal illness is a documented concern in India. The CDC’s 2026 Yellow Book describes a high risk of travelers’ diarrhea and estimates a greater than 60% likelihood during a two-week journey.
The CDC recommends food and water precautions, including fully cooked food served hot. Nothing in South Africa’s statement establishes that Ramaphosa has a gastrointestinal illness.
