A viral Friday post on X stated that Texas had just required public schools to “study Israel’s history,” teach the 1948 founding in the Jews’ “ancestral homeland,” and assign Anne Frank’s diary.
The post by Remarks (@remarks) compressed three real State Board of Education actions into one headline. The votes are real. Texas did not, however, create a stand-alone Israel course.

Here is what the board actually did.
What The Board Adopted
On September 4, the Republican-controlled SBOE voted 8-4 to rewrite high school social studies standards for U.S. History, World History, Government and Geography, as The Dallas Express reported.
A final amendment from SBOE member Audrey Young (R-District 8) requires students to identify 1948 as the date the modern State of Israel was established “in the ancestral homeland of the Jews,” and to identify President Harry Truman as the first world leader to formally recognize Israel.
That is a required identification in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. It is not a semester on Israel. Teachers still write the lesson. Districts still pick the materials. The state now locks in the year, the homeland phrasing and Truman’s recognition.
The same September package, as The Dallas Express reported, also changed how high schoolers encounter Islam, Christianity and 9/11. The Israel clause sat inside that larger rewrite.
Anne Frank Is On A Separate List
The diary is required. It was not part of the September 4 vote.
On June 26 the board approved the nation’s first statewide K-12 required literature list and new K-8 social studies standards. The Dallas Express covered that package, including Chairman Aaron Kinsey’s line that students would “finally get the full story” through chronological history and reading.
The seventh-grade list includes “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank, specified in contemporaneous reporting as the original edition, along with other Holocaust-related texts.
That choice has a Texas backstory.
In 2023 The Dallas Express reported that Hamshire-Fannett ISD fired a substitute middle school teacher after an unapproved graphic adaptation of Frank’s diary was assigned, called “Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation.” There was objection over the illustrated passages about Frank’s sexuality. The new state list points schools to the original diary, not that adaptation.
Ancient Israel Starts In Elementary School
The June K-8 rewrite put ancient Israel in the lower grades.
The Dallas Express reported that the board shifted social studies into chronological order and added an eighth-grade Texas history capstone. Posted SBOE text includes a unit on “Ancient Israel and Connections to America and Texas.”
Students are expected to locate ancient Judea, the Jordan River and Jerusalem; cover Exodus, the Promised Land and the Ten Commandments; and describe how Hebrew teachings influenced American law and Puritan settlement.
The 1948 line is the modern half of that thread: ancient Israel in elementary school, Holocaust reading in middle school, the founding of the state in high school.
When Classrooms Change
Not this school year.
The June reading list and K-8 standards were described at adoption as starting in 2030-31. The Dallas Express later reported that the four high school courses approved September 4 were posted for classroom use in 2033-34.
Until then, current TEKS still govern. Older TEA materials already asked students to cover U.S. support for Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict, including Arab League rejection of Israel’s existence.
The new text is more specific about 1948 and ancestry. It is not Israel’s first appearance in Texas standards.
The Fight Around The Text
The Dallas Express reported in June that 46 Democratic lawmakers asked the board to pause the TEKS and reading-list votes, even as many House signers had backed a 2025 law putting the board on a deadline to revise social studies standards on communist regimes.
The board adopted the June package and finished the high school courses in September. The Israel language survived.
What The Viral Post Got Right
Remarks’ post on September 18 was right that Texas adopted new standards, that 1948 and “ancestral homeland” are in the text, and that Anne Frank is required reading.
It flattened the rest.
“Study Israel’s history” sounds like a dedicated course. The rule is to identify a year, a founding and a homeland phrase, plus Truman. The diary comes from the June literature list.
