What happens when two football fans start talking North Texas high school football in a barber chair and then the games start providing receipts?
In the latest Barber Ball Banter, recorded before Friday night’s games, Louis Darrouzet II and veteran-turned-barber and entrepreneur Matt Steigerwald bounced from the Cowboys to Southlake Carroll, Allen, Duncanville and Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas.
By Saturday, some of those takes were aging better than others. Allen remained unbeaten, Southlake Carroll delivered another dominant win, Jesuit extended its turnaround and Duncanville answered a difficult start with a shutout.
Allen looks like the real deal
When Allen came up, Matt did not hedge much. “They steamrolled Duncanville week one,” he said, before pointing to Allen’s 50-6 demolition of DeSoto. Then came his bigger prediction: “Allen might go win another title this year.”
Louis pushed back on the prediction.
Friday strengthened Matt’s case. Allen defeated Princeton 65-7 and improved to 5-0. The Eagles have opened the season with victories over Duncanville, DeSoto, Southlake Carroll, Prosper and Princeton.
For now, Matt gets to keep his Allen prediction. Louis gets another haircut to argue against it.
Southlake Carroll takes a hit, then responds
Carroll entered the conversation while Louis and Matt were criticizing the Cowboys’ secondary. Matt joked that Southlake Carroll’s high school team “could have played better coverage.”
The Dragons’ own season has been uneven. Carroll opened with a 34-33 win over Jenks before losing to North Crowley and Allen. The Dragons then beat Keller Central and routed Eaton 49-6 on Friday, improving to 3-2.
Carroll may have started as a Barber Ball Banter punchline, but consecutive victories have changed the direction of its season.
Jesuit Dallas is suddenly interesting
Then Louis brought up a school much closer to home: Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas.
Jesuit started 0-2 after losses to Sachse and Rockwall. The Rangers responded by beating Forney 31-14 and shutting out Princeton 45-0.
The turnaround continued Friday. Jesuit built a 27-point lead and held on for a 35-28 homecoming victory over McKinney Boyd. The win moved the Rangers to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district play.
Another date remains worth circling: Jesuit visits Allen on October 23. If both teams continue on their current paths, Louis and Matt may already have one of their best future Barber Ball Banter topics.
Matt called Duncanville’s slide
Matt also made an observation about one of Texas’ most recognizable programs. “I think they’re definitely not as good as they have been years past this year,” he said of Duncanville.
Through four games, the scoreboard supported his point. Duncanville opened 1-3, losing to Allen, DeSoto and North Crowley.
The Panthers answered Friday by shutting out Red Oak 42-0 and improving to 2-3. Duncanville still has too much talent and history to write off, but Matt’s original observation remains defensible after an uneven opening month.
The receipts keep coming
That is what makes Barber Ball Banter work. The opinions do not disappear when the clippers turn off. The games test them.
Friday gave Matt more evidence for his Allen prediction, Southlake Carroll another strong response, Jesuit a third consecutive victory and Duncanville an emphatic answer to its slow start.
Then Louis and Matt return to the chair. Roll the tape. Check the scores. Turn the clippers back on. There is plenty left to argue about.
