Danielle D’Souza Gill says Americans may be taking religious freedom for granted as cultural and political fights increasingly collide with faith and family.
In the latest segment of Let’s Talk Local, host Sarah Zubiate Bennett and D’Souza Gill discuss criticism aimed at D’Souza Gill and her husband, U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), before turning to Islam, religious liberty and the challenge of talking across political divides.
D’Souza Gill argues that certain interpretations of Islam and governments that incorporate Islamic law can conflict with Western and Christian views on women and children. She also questions the political relationship between Muslim communities and the American left, particularly where traditional Islamic teachings clash with progressive positions.
The conversation follows Bennett’s recent Let’s Talk Local interview with U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) about the McKinney mosque controversy, Sharia law and the First Amendment.
“America is such a great place and is so beautiful, and we have so much freedom here that in a way, I think it’s easy to take that for granted,” D’Souza Gill said.
Bennett and D’Souza Gill also discuss how friends and family members who encounter sharply different information online can still talk about religion, culture and politics rather than avoid the disagreements.
