Canadian author Anne Carson won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday, earning recognition for work that draws on classical traditions to create new literary forms, the Swedish Academy announced.
The Swedish Academy awarded the prize “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature,” it said in its October 8 press release.
Carson, 76, was born in Toronto on June 21, 1950.
Carson, the sole laureate, writes in English. She is the third Canadian-born writer to receive the literature prize, after Alice Munro in 2013 and Saul Bellow in 1976, and holds Canadian and Icelandic citizenship.
Her writing brings ancient texts into conversation with contemporary experiences, Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel Committee, explained in the academy’s biobibliography. Carson has combined poetry, translation, and university teaching throughout her career, he noted.
In Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, published in 1998, Carson turns the Greek mythological monster Geryon into a young protagonist navigating love and vulnerability. The book draws on surviving fragments by the ancient Greek poet Stesichoros, Olsson wrote.
Her 2001 book The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos explores a troubled marriage through 29 episodes that open with verse by John Keats. The book won the T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry, Georgetown University’s Lannan Center noted.
Carson also explores desire in Eros the Bittersweet, published in 1986. Olsson described the essay as a foundation for her later writing, tracing its treatment of love’s pain and sweetness to Sappho.
Her translations include If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, published in 2002, and versions of Sophocles’ Electra and Antigone and Euripides’ Bakkhai. These projects accompany a career that began with her 1981 doctoral thesis in classics, Odi et Amo Ergo Sum, according to the academy’s account.
Other works experiment with the physical form of a book. Nox, published in 2010 in memory of her brother Michael, uses an accordion-fold format containing photographs, letters and other texts. Float, published in 2016, contains 22 chapbooks that readers can approach in any order, Olsson explained.
Carson was in Reykjavik, “listening to the wind,” when the academy reached her, permanent secretary Ingrid Carlberg said, reported Malay Mail.
Her agent, Nicole Aragi, told The New York Times that Carson’s reaction was “Yikes.”
Speaking to Icelandic broadcaster RUV, Carson said, “Crazy, I think they’re all crazy,” and added, “I’ll get a sticker on the front of my book.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote that “Ms. Carson has reimagined the classics with wit, imagination, and a style entirely her own.”

The literature award carries 12 million Swedish kronor. The Swedish Academy specified that laureates receive the prize in Stockholm on December 10.
