The Pentagon plans to livestream the firing-squad execution of Fort Hood mass murderer Nidal Malik Hasan, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
The Army has scheduled the execution for December 3 at 1 p.m. Central at Fort Hood, the Texas installation where Hasan killed 13 people in 2009.
“And we’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public,” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said in an interview with Jack Posobiec on Human Events Daily, carried by Real America’s Voice.
Hegseth said soldiers would carry out the execution with rifles and that allowing the public to watch would demonstrate the consequences of such attacks.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, President Donald Trump approved executing Hasan by Army firing squad at Hegseth’s recommendation.
Execution set at site of massacre
Trump approved the death sentence October 2, and acting Army Secretary Adam Telle directed the execution Tuesday, according to the Army’s announcement Wednesday.
Asked during the interview whether Hasan had made a final request or contacted the President, Hegseth replied: “Don’t care. We’ll see him on December 3.”
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire inside Fort Hood’s Soldier Readiness Processing Center on November 5, 2009. He killed 13 people and wounded 31, according to the military appeals court opinion.
The court described Hasan shouting “Allahu Akbar!” before shooting at soldiers. It also recounted his admission at trial that he had “switched sides” in what he described as America’s war on Islam.
A military panel convicted Hasan of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, then sentenced him to death on August 28, 2013. The attempted-murder convictions included an officer Hasan fired at but did not wound.
Further court action remains possible
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review Hasan’s conviction on March 31, 2025, according to the Army. However, presidential approval does not foreclose further court challenges.
A condemned military prisoner can seek review in federal civilian court through a habeas corpus petition and request a stay of execution, Army legal scholars explained in a May analysis.
If the Army carries out the sentence, it would mark the first U.S. military execution since 1961. Pentagon officials said they would release more details about the livestream, AP reported.
