Last week’s Did You Miss It? tracked Dallas’ police shortfall, Muslim political organizing and DSA activity. This week, Dallas City Hall said it would close October 12 for “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” without mentioning Columbus Day, even as the federal holiday and President Donald Trump’s proclamation honored Columbus.

Dallas police leaders warned that eliminating the PPO health plan could hurt retention while the department remains 590 officers short of the voter-approved 4,000. Downtown homelessness and crime fell sharply, but Dallas still recorded nearly eight times Fort Worth’s downtown crime, and a monthlong enforcement operation produced more than 100 arrests.

Outside City Hall, the Trump administration tightened the employment-based green-card pipeline for major technology and outsourcing companies, former Best Buy workers described India outsourcing and Vice President JD Vance backed ending H-1B. The Fort Hood killer’s execution and potential livestream, halal meat in schools, a source-based McKinney church report, the McKinney recall, local tax votes and major Texas growth announcements rounded out the week.

Here are the stories and updates that helped shape the week.

Dallas City Hall, police and transit

Why It Matters: Dallas’ holiday decision put local culture and city priorities back in the spotlight, while the PPO change added a new retention concern for a department still 590 officers short of the voter-approved minimum. Downtown conditions improved and the arrest sweep delivered enforcement results, but Dallas still reported nearly eight times as many downtown offenses as Fort Worth and DART’s incoming CEO arrives under scrutiny tied to his former agency.

H-1B, outsourcing and immigration enforcement

Why It Matters: The Trump administration cut eight major technology and outsourcing companies off from a key employment-based green-card process as former Best Buy workers described the cost of sending work overseas. Vance backed ending H-1B, a watchdog documented limited action on millions of overstay leads, DOJ filed four Texas denaturalization cases and a judge halted Big Bend construction after sector apprehensions had fallen 74%.

Fort Hood, halal schools and religious disputes

Why It Matters: Nidal Hasan’s December 3 firing-squad execution would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961, while Trump said he will decide whether the government broadcasts it. The week also brought disputes over halal-certified meat in public schools, a source-based report on a McKinney church, confusion over two separate Murphy Islamic projects and a guilty plea from an Afghan evacuee who threatened a suicide bombing.

McKinney, campaigns and taxpayer votes

Why It Matters: McKinney’s signature review will determine whether voters get a recall election, while Plano and Dallas County voters face major tax questions tied to an arena and homeless programs. The Senate race also tightened around Talarico’s absence and return as Denton Republicans launched a six-billboard turnout push ahead of November 3.

Crime, courts and child safety

Why It Matters: Cases this week involved locker-room recordings, alleged teacher misconduct, child pornography, labor trafficking and a 33-year-old Dallas murder. The stories put school safeguards, immigration vetting, victim protection and cold-case work under the same public-safety lens.

Texas growth, energy and strategic industry

Why It Matters: Nearly $100 billion in corporate value moved primary listings to Dallas’ Texas Stock Exchange as Blue Origin announced a $554.8 million Hutto campus and more than 2,000 jobs. Rare-earth development, more than 5,400 megawatts of planned power and autonomous freight on the Dallas-Houston corridor show Texas continuing to build financial, industrial and strategic capacity.

That was the week. If you missed it, now you are caught up.
