A woman was shot and killed Thursday morning in what Fort Worth police believe was a road rage incident on Interstate 20, bringing traffic to a standstill near the Hulen Mall area.
The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-20 near Trail Lake Drive and Granbury Road, according to police.
Witnesses told investigators they saw two vehicles traveling eastbound when an apparent road rage confrontation began. Police said the suspect pulled alongside the woman’s vehicle and fired several shots, striking her.
The victim lost control of her vehicle and crashed underneath the Trail Lake Drive overpass.
When officers arrived, they found the woman inside her vehicle with a gunshot wound. Officers and emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect fled following the shooting and remained at large Thursday morning.
Suspect Remains At Large
Fort Worth police have not released a description of the suspect or the vehicle involved.
Officer Cynthia Wood, a Fort Worth police spokeswoman, said investigators were continuing to work to determine what happened before the shooting.
Because the investigation remains active, police have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the apparent road rage confrontation.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to release the victim’s identity.
Everman ISD officials told WFAA that the woman was a teacher’s assistant and was believed to have been traveling to work when she was killed.
I-20 Closed After Shooting
The shooting forced authorities to close all eastbound lanes of I-20 near Granbury Road while investigators processed the scene.
TxDOT cameras showed traffic being diverted off the interstate at Granbury Road. Drivers traveling through the area were urged to avoid I-20 and find alternate routes.
The closure caused significant delays for commuters traveling from Benbrook, southwest Fort Worth, and surrounding communities toward Fort Worth.
Officials warned motorists to expect extended delays while the investigation continued.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or may have information about the suspect or vehicle to contact police.
