New details have emerged in the brutal assault on a Dallas security guard over the weekend that left the victim hospitalized in critical condition.
James Johnson, who works for CDS Protective Services, was attacked Saturday night at a Fuel City station in the 2400 block of Northwest Highway in Northwest Dallas, according to police. Authorities arrested 46-year-old Rosalino Lopez, an illegal alien, in connection with the assault.
Police said the confrontation began after Lopez broke a breaker box at the gas station where Johnson was working. Lopez allegedly became combative when Johnson tried to escort him away from the business, initially striking the security guard with his fists before attacking him with a metal rake.
Johnson used a Taser on Lopez, but it had no effect, police said. Lopez then allegedly struck Johnson in the head with the rake before fleeing the scene.
Witness Helped Protect Injured Guard
Truck driver Michael Black witnessed the attack and said Lopez continued swinging the rake after Johnson fell to the ground.
“The rake actually stuck in his head,” Black said, Fox 4 KDFW reported.
After Johnson collapsed unconscious in the roadway, Black used his truck to block traffic and protect him from being struck by passing vehicles. Black said he called 911 and stayed with Johnson until first responders arrived.
Black later directed officers toward Lopez, who was walking along the highway. Police arrested Lopez nearby and found a metal rake with hair on it in his shopping cart, according to authorities.
Johnson was transported by Dallas Fire-Rescue to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Monday evening.
Suspect Faces Felony Charge
Lopez was booked into the Dallas County Jail and charged with aggravated assault of a security officer causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony, according to jail records. Records also show Lopez is an illegal alien and has been placed on an immigration hold.
CDS Protective Services confirmed that Johnson worked for the company and expressed gratitude to Dallas Fire-Rescue and Dallas police for their responses to the attack and for their ongoing investigation.
