U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) warned Americans not to take their freedoms for granted during a new Let’s Talk Local segment focused on Dearborn, Michigan, Sharia law, and whether similar tensions could emerge in Texas.
“We are too complacent,” Self told host Sarah Zubiate-Bennett. “We think life can go on as it has gone on for the last 60 years.”
The conversation began with clips and commentary tied to Dearborn, which Zubiate-Bennett used to ask Self how communities in Texas can recognize and respond to extremism before it gains a foothold in local institutions.
Self argued that Americans need to better understand Islam and Sharia law and remain alert to long-term efforts by extremists to influence public life.
“And then they start taking power at the school board, at the city council, at the county commissioner’s court,” Self said.
At the same time, Self drew a distinction between extremists and Muslims who want to live peacefully in American society.
“They want to be Muslims, but they want to be Americans,” Self said.
Zubiate-Bennett said her concern is not about peaceful Muslims, but about the possibility of radical movements gaining influence in ways many Americans fail to recognize until it is too late.
“I am not trying to be divisive,” she said. “I do not want that to happen in our country.”
