A handcuffed suspect who escaped from custody near Wills Point early Tuesday morning was recaptured after a member of the public provided authorities with information about his location.
The Wills Point Police Department said the suspect fled around 4 a.m. and was last seen along Van Zandt County Road 3901, also known as Deen Road. The suspect escaped during transfer to the custody of federal immigration officials.
Authorities launched a search after the suspect escaped while handcuffed in front of his body. Police previously described him as a Hispanic male, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, wearing a navy blue shirt or hoodie and blue jeans.
He was believed to be unarmed when he fled. Law enforcement agencies in the area assisted Wills Point police with the search.
The Wills Point City Marshal received information from a community member about the suspect’s whereabouts, according to a department update issued Tuesday afternoon.
Officers responded to the reported location, found the suspect, and took him back into custody without further incident.
Police did not release additional details about the circumstances of his escape or the location where he was found.
The Wills Point Police Department thanked the city marshal, assisting agencies, and other personnel involved in the search. The department also credited residents who remained alert and provided information during the search.
“Your cooperation played an important role in helping law enforcement locate and safely take the suspect into custody,” the department said.
