
A trip to the Texas coast can come with an unexpected hazard before anyone enters the water: airborne toxins from a red tide bloom.
Texas wildlife officials confirmed moderate to high concentrations of red tide near Galveston Island and Crystal Beach during September 7–11, following reports of dead fish and respiratory symptoms along the upper coast.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s latest posted update, reviewed September 14, identifies affected locations on Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
The organism responsible is microscopic, but its effects can reach beyond the water to people standing on the sand.
How Red Tide Reaches The Air
Red tide occurs when the algae Karenia brevis multiply in unusually large concentrations. These algae produce brevetoxins that can harm marine life and irritate people’s eyes and respiratory systems.
According to NOAA’s explanation of red tide exposure, breaking waves can rupture algae cells and release their toxins into sea spray. Winds blowing toward shore can carry that spray onto beaches.
Someone walking beside the water or sitting in a beach chair can therefore experience symptoms without swimming.
Exposure can cause coughing, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. NOAA warns that people with respiratory conditions such as asthma may experience more severe symptoms.
The amount of algae alone does not determine what beachgoers will experience. Wind direction and surf conditions also influence whether toxins reach people onshore.
Where Officials Found It
TPWD reported fish kills and respiratory symptoms at Crystal Beach and several locations across Galveston Island during the September 7–11 reporting period.
Conditions elsewhere along the coast differed.
Monitoring stations at Port O’Connor and Port Aransas recorded algae concentrations below the agency’s reporting threshold. No fish kills were reported in the Golden Crescent or Coastal Bend regions during that update, and the Lower Laguna Madre region had no reports of red tide.
Those findings describe a specific sampling period. They do not establish current conditions at every beach.
Why Conditions Can Change Within Hours
Red tide does not spread evenly across the coastline.
According to TPWD’s red tide guidance, blooms expand, contract and move with winds and tides. Affected patches can occur near stretches of cleaner water, and irritation at one location may change within hours as conditions shift.
The agency advises visitors who feel irritation to leave the affected area. Travelers should heed local beach warnings and check updated information before heading to the coast.
A Seafood Risk That Can Outlast The Bloom
Oysters and other shellfish can accumulate red tide toxins in their tissues, creating a separate risk for people who eat them.
TPWD cautions that toxins can remain in oysters for weeks or months after a bloom appears to have ended. The Texas Department of State Health Services monitors shellfish-growing areas and can close them to harvesting.
The disappearance of discolored water or dead fish does not establish that shellfish are safe to harvest. Visitors should also never eat fish found sick or dead.
