FWPD Sending Officers to Assist with Hurricane Recovery

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – The Fort Worth Police Department has deployed 100 officers to help South Texas residents affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Police say the contingent, to be based in downtown Houston, will include an assistant chief, three lieutenants and 10 sergeants. The Texas Department of Public Safety will make assignments and determine shifts once the officers arrive in South Texas.

“I reached out to Chief Acevedo on Friday,” said Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald. “We got to talking again on Sunday. They asked for personnel to come down and help so we worked it out.”

Fort Worth Officers will most likely assist the Houston Police Department.

“We’re working through the state but I’m pretty sure they will work hand in hand with Houston Officers to make sure the city is under control,” Chief Fitzgerald said.

It’s unknown how long Fort Worth Officers will be in Houston. Other Officers could be sent for relief later in the recovery effort.
