DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas City Council has approved $8 million for emergency funds that will be reimbursed by the state.
$5 million was immediately approved with an additional $3 million approved at the discretion of the Mayor, upon recommendation of the City Manager. The City Council will not have to reconvene for $3 million more, but the Mayor and City Manager must agree it is needed and will be reimbursed.
Unsure of how long recovery will take and how many evacuees are coming, the city wants to be prepared.
“I don’t want us to be surprised by the numbers being high or by them being low,” said Mayor Mike Rawlings. “We need to understand that the curve is very wide here.”
More than 800 evacuees are already in Dallas. City officials told the City Council that housing evacuees is expensive and can cost up to $100,000 a day for utilities alone at all four shelters currently being used.
