DALLAS — Seven years to the day Amber Guyger was convicted of murder in the shooting of Botham Jean, Guyger has been granted parole, WFAA has confirmed.
Guyger, a Dallas police officer at the time of the shooting, was found guilty of murdering Jean in 2018. She said she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own, assumed he was an intruder and shot him.
According to the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole said the reasons for approval were:
- The record does not include a documented pattern of violent or assaultive arrests/convictions.
- The record indicates that the offender has maintained a satisfactory institutional adjustment.
- The record indicates participation in and completion of programs and activities in the individual treatment plan that should enhance chances to obtain and maintain full-time stable employment.
The BBP has not said when she will be released from prison.
The Dallas Police Department issued the following statement saying in part, “Our thoughts remain with the Jean family and all those impacted by his loss. Parole decisions are made by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and are outside the authority of the Dallas Police Department and we had no role in this decision.”
DPD fired Guyger days after the shooting on September 24, 2018.
