North Texas Police Raise Money for Houston Officers

Richardson (WBAP/KLIF News) – A golf outing in Richardson has raised $60,000 for Houston police officers whose homes were damaged in Hurricane Harvey. The Assist the Officer Foundation presented checks to Houston police Monday.

“We know we’re blessed here,” says the foundation’s Frederick Frazier. “We know our community supports us.”

Houston police say 350 officers’ homes were destroyed. During the worst of the storm, officers stayed in police stations, working 12 hour shifts.

“I had three air mattresses in my office where people were sleeping,” says the Houston Police Officers Union’s Ray Hunt. “Some of them didn’t see their kids for four or five days, they left them with relatives or babysitters because they had to get the job done.”

Hunt says officers stayed on the job, even not knowing if their home had escaped damage.

“In our line of work, we have to work shooting scenes where one of our own has been killed, we have to work accident scenes where one of our own has been hit,” he says. “We are used to these kinds of actions we have to do.”

Hunt says the money will help officers repay loans from FEMA.

The Assist the Officer Foundation was founded in 1999. The money will go to the Houston Police Union, Combined Law Enforcement Agencies of Texas and Texas Municipal Police Association.
