State Rep. James Talarico (D-District 50), Texas’ Democratic U.S. Senate nominee, has gone nearly two weeks without a public in-person campaign appearance in the state, turning what his campaign calls a case of the flu into a late-campaign question that President Donald Trump and Republican nominee Ken Paxton are pressing publicly.

NBC News places Talarico’s last public in-person Texas campaign event on September 26.

Public reporting does not agree on a single date for his subsequent New York fundraising.

NBC News places a private fundraiser on September 29, while Texas Scorecard published an invitation for a September 28 fundraiser and later described his New York fundraising swing as continuing on September 29.

Talarico joined a United States Hispanic Business Council forum by video on September 30 after saying a Dallas urgent care clinic diagnosed him with the flu. Campaign spokesman JT Ennis said Thursday that Talarico “looks forward to being back out this weekend after recovering from the flu,” per WPTC 5.

Meanwhile, Paxton has demanded “proof of life,” Trump has questioned Talarico’s whereabouts, and unsupported claims about the Democrat’s health and location have spread online.

Where The Timeline Lands

The documented timeline centers on September 26, September 28-29 and September 30. NBC News identifies September 26 as Talarico’s last public in-person Texas campaign event. The New York fundraising dates vary by source, with NBC News citing September 29 and Texas Scorecard documenting an event invitation for September 28.

On September 30, Talarico had planned to appear in person in Edinburg for the USHBC’s “In Dialogue: Texas” forum. The organization’s official event page confirms his participation in the candidate series.

Talarico instead appeared by video and said, “I was starting to feel kind of under the weather a few days ago and last night it got so bad that I went to the urgent care here in Dallas, and I was diagnosed with the flu.”

Ennis’ latest statement stops short of setting a fixed public return date. He said Talarico “looks forward to being back out this weekend after recovering from the flu.”

Paxton And Trump Turn Up The Pressure

Paxton raised Talarico’s absence at Trump’s October 7 rally at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, reported Texas Scorecard. He then led the crowd in a brief “Where is James Talarico?” chant, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Paxton’s campaign escalated the theme the next day. Paxton posted on X that his campaign had “a simple request: proof of life.” Campaign spokeswoman Madison Cercy used the same wording in comments to NBC News.

Trump also wrote on Truth Social that Talarico was “MISSING IN ACTION!” and later called for the two Senate nominees to debate.

Talarico responded on October 8: “President Trump just said Ken Paxton should debate. I agree. Ball’s in your court @KenPaxtonTX.” Neither campaign had announced a debate as of Friday.

Rumors Outrun The Evidence

The information gap has also produced claims that go beyond what the campaign has acknowledged.

On October 9, commentator Spencer Pratt claimed on X that unnamed sources told him Talarico was in a mental-health facility. Pratt supplied no named source or public documentation supporting the claim.

My sources are telling me Talarico is in a mental health facility. His campaign has stopped actively planning events in the vital homestretch of the campaign.

If this is true, this is actually a time to pray for Talarico. We should, of course, savagely mock his smug, awful… https://t.co/H2VVSPeQlF

Blaze Media host Sara Gonzales had said one day earlier that she had received “unverified information” about Talarico’s whereabouts. She did not publish evidence confirming a facility stay.

I have received unverified information on James Talarico's whereabouts. If true, it will END his campaign.

I am asking anyone who can verify where James Talarico has been to email me with confirmation. YOU WILL STAY TOTALLY ANONYMOUS.

The Dallas Express found no public documentation or campaign statement that substantiates a mental-health-facility stay. The campaign continues to attribute Talarico’s absence to the flu.

Piker Adds A Separate Pressure Point

Talarico also faces a separate political pressure point from his left. As The Dallas Express previously covered, socialist streamer Hasan Piker discussed Talarico during a September 30 event at the University of Texas at Austin.

Piker told the audience that activists who backed Talarico should continue pressing him if he wins, adding that “if he wants to maintain it, he’s got to play ball.”

Nothing in the available evidence connects Piker’s remarks to Talarico’s illness or absence. The comments instead add a separate question about how Talarico would respond to pressure from activists on the left if Texas voters send him to Washington.

Earlier DX Coverage Adds Context

The Dallas Express has also examined controversies surrounding Talarico’s use of Christian language in his campaign. A June article documented that his longtime Austin congregation, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, listed Planned Parenthood Greater Texas among organizations the church said shared its “vision and goals for the world” and received support through its benevolence budget.

On October 8, DX published a separate article on a Center for Baptist Leadership call urging Christians to vote rather than sit out the election. The article also asked Christian voters to examine how candidates who invoke Christianity define and apply their faith. Talarico describes himself as a “Presbyterian seminarian” and has placed his Christian faith near the center of his Senate campaign.

Those controversies and Piker’s remarks do not establish anything about Talarico’s current absence. They provide context for the scrutiny already surrounding his candidacy as the Senate race enters its final weeks.

What Comes Next

Ennis said Talarico “looks forward to being back out this weekend after recovering from the flu.” CNN and Jubilee Media have scheduled a live town hall with Talarico in Fort Worth on October 14 at 7 p.m. Central. CNN also invited Paxton.

Texas early voting begins October 19 and runs through October 30. Election Day falls on November 3.
