America may still be a nation of dog lovers, but something curious is happening with its youngest pets.
For the first time since market research firm Packaged Facts began tracking the measure, more U.S. households have a kitten than a puppy, a shift researchers say may have less to do with Americans suddenly becoming “cat people” than with housing, money and the way people live.
Packaged Facts reported that in 2014 there were 1.8 households with a dog younger than 1 year old for every household with a cat of the same age.
The ratio reached parity in 2025. In 2026, it flipped to 0.94 puppy-owning households for every kitten-owning household.
But the change is not being driven primarily by a surge in cats.
The number of American households with dogs has fallen about 5% since 2019 while cat ownership has remained relatively stable, according to Packaged Facts.
Is Modern Life Becoming More Cat-Friendly?
Part of the answer may come down to practicality.
Cats generally require less space and can be left alone more easily than dogs. Packaged Facts estimates owners spend an average of about $1,300 annually on a dog compared with roughly $750 on a cat.
Housing may be another factor.
Homeowners are nearly twice as likely as renters to own dogs, according to the firm’s data. Elevated home prices, mortgage rates and other affordability pressures may therefore affect not only where people live but which animals comfortably fit into those lives.
Smaller households, apartment living and increased travel also favor pets requiring less daily logistical attention.
That does not mean Americans are losing their attachment to animals.
The Dallas Express previously reported on the rise of “pet humanization,” particularly among Millennials and Generation Z, as owners increasingly treat animals as members of the family and spend accordingly on their care.
What may be changing is which pet best fits the modern American household.
Meanwhile, Dogs Wait Longer in Shelters
A separate national trend adds another dimension.
Shelter Animals Count found that approximately 3.7 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues during the first half of 2026.
Cat adoptions reached 1 million, up 13.2% from the first half of 2016. Dog adoptions totaled roughly 1.06 million, but that remained 72,000 below the comparable 2016 figure.
Adult dogs represented 236,000 animals, or 66% of all dogs still in care at midyear.
Dallas offers a striking local snapshot.
As of Monday afternoon, Dallas Animal Services listed 429 dogs occupying 307 kennels, putting dog kennel capacity at 140%. The shelter listed 75 cats occupying 95 kennels, or 80% capacity.
Those figures do not establish a direct connection between changing household pet preferences and shelter overcrowding. Shelter populations are affected by numerous factors, including stray intake, owner surrenders, adoption rates and how long animals remain in care.
Still, dog overcrowding is hardly new locally. The Dallas Express reported in June that Dallas Animal Services was then operating at roughly 160% dog capacity.
What Our Pets Say About Us
Pet ownership might seem like an unlikely measure of social change.
Yet millions of individual choices about whether to bring home a puppy, kitten or no pet at all eventually reveal something about how people are living.
A homeowner with children and a backyard may still envision a dog racing across the lawn. Someone renting a smaller apartment, working long hours or watching expenses may reach a different conclusion.
That makes the emerging puppy-kitten divide about more than which animal Americans prefer.
Perhaps the more interesting question is not whether America is becoming a nation of cat people.
It is whether American life is becoming better suited to cats.
