The Dallas City Council has approved roughly $2.2 million in taxpayer dollars from the 2024 bond program for six new traffic signals, with city records estimating construction will begin in November and finish in 2028.
The city announced the approval Wednesday as part of its Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and reduce serious injury crashes. Two construction contracts on the council’s October 14 agenda total $2,231,351.28.
Six intersections, two contracts
The council agenda lists EAR Telecommunications, LLC, doing business as EARTC, as the contractor for four signals under a contract capped at $1,522,225.10. That group covers Masters Drive at Checota Drive, Pear Ridge Drive at Haverwood, Jefferson Boulevard at Van Buren Avenue, and Buckner Boulevard at Gross Road.
City records estimate construction for those four signals will begin in November 2026 and conclude in August 2028. EARTC submitted the lowest responsible bid among seven bidders.
The second agenda item identifies Texas Standard Construction, Ltd. as the contractor for signals at Illinois Avenue at Western Park and Wheatland Road at Greenspan Avenue. That contract has a $709,126.18 cap, with construction estimated to run from November 2026 through April 2028. The company submitted the lowest responsible bid among nine bidders.
Both contracts draw funding from the 2024 bond program’s Street and Transportation (A) Fund.
Vision Zero progress
Dallas adopted its Vision Zero Action Plan on June 8, 2022. The city said its safety work includes engineering changes, signal timing adjustments and pedestrian improvements.
“Every person deserves to travel safely through Dallas,” City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said in the release. “These investments demonstrate how we are turning our commitment to safer streets into action. By continuing to put bond dollars to work, we are strengthening transportation infrastructure and supporting our goal of preventing tragedies on our roads.”
The Dallas Express previously reported on council scrutiny of Vision Zero’s progress in 2024.
The October 14 release did not provide intersection-specific crash data or explain how the city selected the six locations. It also did not report whether traffic deaths or serious injury crashes have declined since the action plan’s adoption.
