North Texas aerospace companies face a growing challenge: finding enough skilled workers to manufacture, maintain and repair aircraft. A new $1 million workforce-training commitment aims to help close that gap, but its benefits will not arrive overnight.
The GE Aerospace Foundation announced Wednesday, October 14, that its Lifting Futures initiative plans to support four Dallas-Fort Worth organizations in 2027.
The foundation expects the first-year grants to benefit more than 1,100 people, including veterans, as it pursues a broader goal of training 10,000 workers across several communities by 2030.
The commitment follows summer discussions with more than 30 education, industry and civic organizations. Participants identified growing demand, limited awareness of aerospace careers and poor coordination among workforce programs as challenges, according to the foundation.
What The Funding Would Change
Dallas College plans to add instructors in computer numerical control machining, industrial maintenance, aviation maintenance and aerospace logistics, creating capacity for 125 additional students each year. Tarrant County College plans to expand aviation maintenance laboratories for another 25 students per semester.
The Manufacturing Institute’s Heroes MAKE America initiative will help veterans translate military experience into qualifications employers recognize, with one effort intended to reach about 1,000 veterans. Big Thought will recruit students into existing manufacturing training programs.
Those figures describe projected program reach and training capacity, not confirmed job placements. The announcement did not provide application deadlines or promise jobs to participants.
A Fort Worth Jobs Deadline Adds Context
GE Aerospace already has a separate economic-development commitment in Fort Worth. City records describe a seven-year tax-abatement agreement involving an expansion of GE On Wing Support operations near the airport. The agreement calls for at least 100 full-time jobs at the project site by December 31, 2026.
In an August 2025 council document, city staff explained that an earlier jobs deadline of December 31, 2025, had appeared in error and should have read December 31, 2026. The document does not establish whether the company has already met the employment target. The tax-abatement project and the foundation’s new grants are distinct initiatives.
A Larger Workforce Question
At the October 14 Axios “Aerospace’s Workforce Moment” event, industry representatives from GE Aerospace, Lockheed Martin and Bell joined education and workforce leaders to discuss the regional talent pipeline.
“The Metroplex is one of the country’s key aerospace hubs, and its future depends on successfully training the people who build, design and run it,” GE Aerospace Chief Human Resources Officer Christian Meisner said during the event, according to the company’s release.
For North Texans looking beyond traditional four-year degree pathways, the announcement points to careers in manufacturing and maintenance. Whether the new training capacity produces enough qualified workers to meet employers’ needs remains a question for 2027 and beyond.
