Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux says SWAT officers buy doors with their own money to practice breaching, one example of the training needs he highlights ahead of the city’s Proposition A vote.
On Let’s Talk Midterms, Comeaux takes host Sarah Zubiate Bennett through the department’s aging training facilities, showing where officers learn the skills they need to protect Dallas residents.
“They actually go out and find doors and purchase doors with their own money,” Comeaux said during the tour.
Comeaux says growing recruit classes force instructors to split firearms training across multiple days. The visit also covers deteriorating range buildings and training structures officers built themselves.
“I’m trying to put together the best team possible, and we need facilities to do that,” he said.
The city’s $443 million Proposition A would help fund a new police academic center and a separate public safety training complex, along with other facilities.
Dallas City Council Member Cara Mendelsohn (District 12) opposes the bond over debt and spending safeguards, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Early voting continues through October 30. Election Day is November 3.
Watch the full tour above to see the facilities firsthand and hear why Comeaux believes Proposition A matters for training and recruiting.
