FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – A case of the mumps has been confirmed within the Texas Christian University community and Tarrant County Health Officials are trying to find out if any other students were exposed.
Health Department Chief Epidemiologist Russell Jones said they don’t think the person contracted the disease on campus.
“As far as originating, based on findings we believe probably the exposure occurred outside of our community,” he said.
Mumps are a highly contagious disease and the symptoms are easy to spot.
“Body aches, fever but the big one is what we called parotidis…swelling of the salivary glad. So, you have one side or both sides of your face swell up rather large,” said Jones.
He said those in the TCU community that have been vaccinated should be alright.
“If you’re vaccinated, you’re most likely protected. People who have not had at least two measles, mumps, rubella vaccinations should get their second one,” said Jones.
The department is monitoring anyone who may have been near the infected person to see if they develop symptoms.
Neither the Tarrant County Health Department or anyone from TCU has confirmed whether the infected person is a student or a professor.
