DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – America’s biggest milk processor filed for bankruptcy Tuesday.

The announcement from Dean Foods comes amid a steady drop-off in milk consumption in the United States. It’s been a continuous decline in milk consumption most recently blamed on a variety of choices. Government records show Americans drank around 24 gallons of milk per year in 1996. That dropped to 17 gallons last year.

Moving forward, the Dallas based company said it may sell itself to the marketing co-op Dairy Farmers of America.

Dean employs close to 16,000 people and operates 60 processing facilities across the U.S.
