DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- A Dallas-based non profit is providing hope and a warm meal to the homeless this Thanksgiving. Approximately 550 volunteers will round up their family members, assemble linens and decorate tables at the Our Calling Center for the unsheltered homeless. “It’s moms and dads with their kids seated at tables, having a family meal with the rest of the table filled with homeless friends,” said Our Calling Founder Wayne Walker. “It’s a great fellowship opportunity for those who don’t have a family and those families who just want to invite people to their table,” he said.
Norma’s Café in Oak Cliff is catering the meal. “Everyday people experiencing homelessness struggle to be accepted by the community as well as find access to basic necessities like food. On Thanksgiving and holidays like this we remember them, but these needs arise everyday of the year,” said Walker.
And over 300 refugees in North Texas gather to celebrate and experience one of their new home’s oldest traditions, with a Thanksgiving meal.
St. Matthew’s Cathedral Church is hosting the meal on Ross Avenue in Dallas.
Dr. Samira Page founder of Dallas-based Gateway of Grace Ministry says when her family came here from Iran, the holidays were extremely difficult…with no place to go and no money to spend on food.
“For many this is their first Thanksgiving and we want to help them experience an American holiday with the warmth and welcome from the people of Dallas,” said Page. “These refugees have experienced loss and trauma and they have been away from their families. so this is a step toward their integration into American culture,” she said.
Page said she’s thankful for her opportunities in Dallas.
