Economists Watching Potential Impact of Texas Abortion Law on Business

(Texas Gov. Greg Abbott)

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas economists say the impact of the state’s newly enacted abortion law has yet to be seen.

In recent years, big corporations have been vocal in opposing some state laws.

“Both the NBA and the NCAA pulled events from North Carolina when they passed the restrictive bill on transgender rights,” said Texas Economist, Dr. Ray Perryman. “We saw the Major League [baseball] All Star Game leave Georgia when they passed a restrictive voting bill.”

Perryman said that Texas is vulnerable to the same kind of decisions because the state attracts major sporting events.

The City of Portland, Oregon is considering a ban on trading goods and services from Texas.

“The City of Portland has purchased a total of $34,656,323 in goods and services originating from Texas during the past five years,” said Portland City Spokesperson, Heather Hafer. “These purchases were made between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2021.”

But, economists are paying close attention to big business.

“What Portland is doing, what California is talking about, is more for optics than anything else,” said Economist Bud Weinstein. “Politicians want to express their displeasure with what’s happened in Texas.”

No major announcements have been made by major corporations related to potential boycotts.
