(WBAP/KLIF) — World-wide concern about the Omicron variant has Texans concerned. The variant has yet to reach the United States, however experts predict it will. Texas A&M virologist Ben Neuman says there isn’t much known about the variant, however a clearer picture will emerge in two weeks.

Science from the sequence points to Omicron being resistant, but not a fast spreader. Scientists are getting a better look at the new omicron variant of COVID-19, and Neuman says time will tell whether the mutations make it more or less dangerous than Delta.
The medical community will better understand the threat now that Omicron has showed up in places already infected by Delta. With the onset of omicron, Americans are wondering if current vaccines provide protection. Neuman believes that a separate vaccine may be required for the new strain. Experts are concerned about the mutations of omicron because it has the potential to avoid developed vaccines.
However, Neuman says if Omicron is not stronger than the Delta variant, the threat will be minimal. The dominance of Delta has driven all other strains into extinction.
