American Airlines Fourth-Quarter Report Reveals Slightly Higher Revenue, Omicron Still a Concern

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – American Airlines reported its fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 financial results Thursday, revealing a slight uptick in revenue as the omicron variant of COVID-19 dealt a blow to the industry.

The Fort Worth-based carrier made $9.4 billion in revenue for the fourth-quarter, losing $931 million, that’s down 17% in comparison to the same period in 2019.

American said it lost $1.42 a share versus analysts’ estimate of a $1.48 per-share loss.

The carrier reported a full-year net loss of $2 billion or $3.09 per share.

“As we close out the second year of operating in a global pandemic, we are incredibly proud of the American Airlines team,” said American’s Chairman and CEO Doug Parker. “Over the past year, we have experienced periods of travel demand countered by periods of decreased demand due to new COVID-19 variants. The volatility has created the most challenging planning environment in the history of commercial aviation.”

Last year, American hired 16,000 employees and said it’s plan is to bring on 18,000 more this year.

The hiring spree came as American and other carriers tried to boost flights and increase pay for fatigued employees but were plagued by staffing shortages and cancellations exacerbated by illnesses, weather and internal battles with pilots and flight attendants.

American said it safely transported more than 165 million passengers in 2021, adding that’s more than any other carrier.
