The City of Dallas, 2 Local Sites to Open Temporary Warming Centers

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Another winter snap is headed for North Texas Friday night and the City of Dallas wants to make sure its most vulnerable citizens have a place to stay warm.

Below freezing temperatures and wintry precipitation will blanket the region until Saturday morning.

The J. Erik Jonsson Central Library downtown at 1515 Young Street, Oak Lawn United Methodist Church at 3014 Oak Lawn Avenue and the Our Calling Homeless Shelter at 1702 S. Cesar Chavez Boulevard will serve as temporary warming shelters to the homeless.

The City of Dallas’ Office of Homeless Solution’s Christine Crossley encourages the unsheltered to take advantage of the centers.

“It’s simply not safe to remain outside and there are no strings to this shelter, no barriers, we’re not looking at backgrounds checks. We want to get people out of the cold,” she said.

Intake at each temporary shelter will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Those who arrive at UMC after intake hours will be directed to the Our Calling Shelter of the Central Library, which will remain open for intakes throughout the night.

COVID-19 testing will be available at all locations and those who test positive will be taken to an undisclosed location, kept private for safety reasons.
