FORT WORTH – (WBAP/KLIF) – A high pressure system is bringing heat more likely to be seen during high summer to the entire state of Texas and most of Oklahoma this weekend, due to slide for a bit of a break this week and then back next weekend.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Patricia Sanchez says blistering heat will be the norm this weekend with the mercury expected to reach at 110F or higher “feels like” temperatures. The mercury will top 100 this weekend, dip to the upper 90s for some of next week, and then return to bake the Lone Star State again next weekend.
A heat advisory is in effect through at least Sunday, 7pm. Dangerous fire conditions in New Mexico could worsen as well, with more than 500 thousand acres charred east of Santa Fe and underway now for several weeks, and five wildfires burning across Texas. With the very dry conditions, officials remind us not to drag chains or metal behind our vehicles, causing sparks which can ignite new wildfires, and to turn off engines if we need to pull over to the side of the road on top of or adjacent to the very dry weeds.
Provide shade and water for animals outside, dress in cool, light colored clothing appropriate for heat, and stay hydrated; officials warn heat related illnesses can present symptoms quickly.
