Marna Davis: 2/6/15 A girl has to eat

When you’re out covering stories across the Metroplex, you have to eat when and where you can.  Fast food salads are okay on the fly (Chick-fil-A Grilled Market Salad is my favorite) but what I live for are holes in the wall, farmers markets, food courts, food trucks and taco stands.

I love the flavors in food from around the world.  Asian soups with lemongrass, Middle Eastern curry, Pico de Gallo salsa with lots of cilantro, home made fresh tortillas, African lentils, Southern greens, Texas Barbeque, spicy fried chicken, anything with seafood.

If I’m out on a story, and I see a line of  people at a taco stand, that is where I am going.  I recently did a story on gas prices.  I headed to Fuel City on Riverfront Blvd. because their convenience store includes a taco stand which serves some of the best street tacos in town.  Two of us ate for under ten dollars.  Fuel City’s taco shop is Zagat rated and is open 24 hours a day.  The pork and barbacoa tacos are perfectly seasoned, steaming hot, topped with onions and cilantro and two types of fresh salsa.  Right out front is a cart with a Mexican creamed corn, lemon pepper dish served in a Styrofoam cup.  It is addictive and beyond delicious.  I want to eat it everyday for the next month.

Covering the Martin Luther King Day parade, I was in heaven.  Barbeque trucks with smokers on the back lined up on the parade route.  I ate the best rib tips, chopped beef and cole slaw ever.

If I see Ruthie’s Food Truck, I’m pulling over for a grilled cheese dipped into their tomato basil soup.  Ask for extra slob on the side.  It’s the special sauce they put on their sandwiches before grilling and I want it on everything I eat.

Sometime you get to eat fancy lunches when you cover a story.  The Dallas Rotary Club recently hosted former Arkansas Governor, and probable presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.  The Hyatt served chicken and broccolini and a side salad with awesome raspberry vinaigrette.  The salad dressing was so good I dipped my chicken in it. It is very rare that a reporter gets to sit down at a table and have a nice lunch, so we really do appreciate it when it’s offered.

Doughnuts come into the newsroom all the time and I’ll take one bite.  If it’s not awesome, I’m not eating it.  “A minute on the lips, forever on the hips.”

When I get hungry out in the field, my smart phone becomes my best friend.  Yelp and Urban Spoon help me decide where I’m going to eat.

I eat these high calorie delicacies a few times a week.  I’m working hard and I get hungry.  I wear a “Fit Bit” and I get in at least 10,000 steps a day and I also go to the gym at least four times a week.

I work out, so that I can eat.  My job allows me the opportunity to cover the news across the Metroplex and trying new spots in new neighborhoods is one of the best perks.
